This notification is to inform you of the availability of Impinj R700 series reader firmware version 9.0 that supports the European Union (EU) Radio Equipment Directive (RED) cybersecurity requirements, which went into effect on August 1, 2025.
To ensure compliance with the new EU RED requirements, Impinj R700 series ETSI readers must be upgraded to firmware version 9.0. Impinj will begin shipping R700 series ETSI models with firmware version 9.0 pre-installed in the coming months. Downgrading to version 8.4 or any earlier firmware will not be supported.
If you are in an EU country and receive shipment of an Impinj R700 series ETSI reader or have existing inventory that has not been upgraded to firmware version 9.0, we recommend updating the firmware to version 9.0 to ensure EU RED compliance.
Important Behavioral Changes – EN 18031 Standard
To meet the requirements of the EU’s EN 18031 series of cybersecurity standards, firmware version 9.0 introduces changes to the default behavior of ETSI models of the Impinj R700 and R720 RFID readers. These changes may impact existing workflows. We recommend reviewing and updating your applications and workflows to align with the changes introduced in this release.
